You’ve seen those diamond-shaped stickers around town with the outline of Wisconsin and a giant bold question mark in the middle. It was just the other day, I was in a bathroom at a local bar, and the “Why Not Wausau?” sticker was plastered to the top of the toilet.
Word has gotten around, but many are still unsure of what Gerald Mortensen, Director and Coordinator of Sneak Peak and Flapjack Enterprises, is really trying to accomplish in Wausau.
“I hope to bring a festival the size of Bonnaroo or Lollapolooza to Wausau. But that takes cooperation from Rib Mountain, sponsors and local support. It’s all baby steps,” he said. Read the full story

Everyone knows someone who knows someone whose little sister’s ex-BFF has caught the swine flu. Or so the stories are told. One has to wonder if the stories are true, or if H1N1 is being blown way out of proportion. Read the full story

The Forum’s first issue of volume 47 is now available in stands around the UWMC campus. Look for it around Wausau in the days to come. The road to completing this first edition was filled with challenges. But I think we can all agree that the finished product was worth the wait.
We’ve learned a great deal about print production in the past few weeks. The first issue was produced using Adobe InDesign and typeset in Caslon Pro. The layout emphasizes efficient use of space and as a result, we were able to densely pack this first issue with great articles while still having room for many pictures. You will also notice many of the pages were printed in color (although we regret having printed the “In Photos” section in grayscale).
Look for the next edition of The Forum’s print edition in early November.

On September 17th, the Acoustic Cafe hit the lights in the Union round room at UWMC. Musicians like Nick Hull, Gordon Stewart, Levi Scott, Luke Lundgren, Pa Kou Lee and Jake Balzer among many others hit the stage and jammed out tunes on acoustic guitars and bongo drums.
Several poets also made showings including Max Brooks and Lauren Spodic, speaking on topics of love, Brooks swinging away from his usual comedy act.
Gordon Stewart said, “It’s fun. I’d like to come back. Get other stuff ready for it.”
The next Acoustic Cafe will be on October 15, 2009 at 7:00 pm in the Student Union.

As both our nation and state become more smoke free, it seems likely that public universities will follow the trend. According to Student Governance Council (SGC) President, Chase Boruch, a survey will be posted this month for all two-year universities in Wisconsin regarding a possible ban in the future.
